A Dynamical Moedl of Context Dependencies for the Vestibulo-Ocular Reflex

چکیده
The vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) stabilizes images on the retina during rapid head motions. The gain of the VOR, i.e. the ratio of eye to head rotation velocity, measured with the eyes focused at a distance is typically around -1. However, to stabilize images accurately, the vestibulo-ocular reflex response must be modulated by the context in which the response takes place. The context studied in this paper includes eye position, eye vergence and head translation. We first describe a kinematic model of the vestibulo-ocular reflex response given rotational and translational information of the head motion. We then show how the model can be modified to rely solely on sensory information available from the semicircular canals (head rotation), the otoliths (head translation), and neural correlates of eye position and vergence angle. We then suggest a dynamical model and compare it to the eye velocity responses measured in monkeys (Snyder and King, 1992). The VOR response is nearly identical to an ideal theoretical response taking into account sensory input delays. The model captures the dynamical modulation of the VOR for this context. It defines which neural signals should be combined and suggests one possible way to perform the required computations in time. It therefore provides a theoretical explanation for the sensitivity of neurons to multiple inputs (head rotation and translation, eye position, etc.) in the pathways of the VOR.

Vestibulo-Ocular Reflex Abnormalities in Posterior Semicircular Canal Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo: A Pilot Study
Introduction: Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV), involving the semicircular canals, is one of the most common diseases of the inner ear. The video head impulse test (vHIT) is a new test that examines the function of the canals. This study aimed to investigate the vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) gain, gain asymmetry and saccades after stimulating all six canals in patients definitively d...
متن کاملHybrid model of the context dependent vestibulo-ocular reflex: implications for vergence-version interactions
The vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) is an involuntary eye movement evoked by head movements. It is also influenced by viewing distance. This paper presents a hybrid nonlinear bilateral model for the horizontal angular vestibulo-ocular reflex (AVOR) in the dark. The model is based on known interconnections between saccadic burst circuits in the brainstem and ocular premotor areas in the vestibular...

OBJECTIVE To characterize the horizontal angular vestibulo-ocular reflex using a new motorized head impulse rotator and electro-oculography technique. DESIGN Prospective case-control study. PARTICIPANTS We included 22 healthy volunteers with unpredictable, horizontal motorized head impulses with a mean velocity of 170 degrees/s and a mean acceleration of 1550 degrees/s2. We recorded head an...

The vestibulo-ocular reflex, because of its close relationship with the cerebellum and its marked adaptiveness, has become a model system for studying the functions of the cerebellum. It has been hypothesized that an evolutionarily old part of the cerebellum, the flocculus, forms a modifiable accessory pathway for the vestibulo-ocular reflex arc for adaptive control, and that the modification i...
متن کاملCorrelation between vestibulo-ocular reflex and optokinetic afternystagmus in normal subjects and in patients with vestibular system disorders.
Optokinetic afternystagmus follows optokinetic nystagmus as an expression of the central velocity storage integrator discharge and its fast phase is beating in the same direction as the previous optokinetic nystagmus. We investigated the correlation between vestibulo-ocular reflex and optokinetic afternystagmus in normal subjects and in patients with bilateral vestibular disorders. The aim of t...
